Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Crater Magic and Wildebeest Calving Plains

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is one of Africa’s most unique and spectacular safari destinations — renowned for dramatic landscapes, remarkable wildlife diversity, and world-class game viewing. Adjacent to the Southern Serengeti Plains, the Ndutu region inside NCA is a premier destination for witnessing the Great Wildebeest Migration calving season, making this combined area an unforgettable part of any Tanzania safari.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area exemplifies the coexistence of wildlife and local pastoral cultures, with breathtaking scenery, rich biodiversity, and vibrant Maasai traditions.

Ngorongoro Crater — The Eighth Wonder of the World

At the heart of the Conservation Area lies the Ngorongoro Crater — the largest intact volcanic caldera on Earth. Spanning roughly 304 km² and formed by the collapse of an ancient volcano, the crater floor hosts a year-round resident population of wildlife including lions, elephants, buffaloes, black rhinos, zebra, wildebeest, hippos, ostriches, and spotted hyenas.

Why Visit the Crater

  • Big Five in One Place — One of the few ecosystems on the continent where all Big Five species can be seen in a single day.
  • Dense Wildlife — Over 25,000 large animals thrive on the crater floor with abundant predators and prey.
  • All-Season Viewing — Unlike some national parks that are tied closely to Migration patterns, the crater offers extraordinary wildlife viewing year-round.
  • Birdlife Hotspot — With diverse habitats from grasslands to swamps, over 550 bird species can be spotted here.

Top Crater Highlights

  • Lerai Forest & Lerai Swamp — Excellent birding and elephant sightings.
  • Hippo Pools and Waterholes — Bustling activity around permanent water sources.
  • Black Rhino Habitat — Efforts to protect this endangered species allow rare sightings.

Ndutu Area — Calving Grounds & Migration Action

Located in the north-western part of the Ngorongoro Conservation AreaNdutu lies on the edge of the Southern Serengeti plains. Its vast short-grass plains, acacia groves, alkaline lakes, and fertile grazing attract enormous numbers of wildlife — particularly during the wildebeest Migration calving season

Great Wildebeest Migration & Calving Season

Each year, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles follow the rains south from the Serengeti and into the Ndutu area between December and March. Here, the short green grasslands provide ideal nutrition for the herds and their newborn calves.

During peak calving (typically mid-January through February), up to 8,000 wildebeest calves are born each day, attracting predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas in dramatic wildlife encounters.

Key Ndutu Features

  • Lake Ndutu & Lake Masek — Excellent water-source wildlife viewing and birdlife.
  • Migration Grazing Grounds — Herds stay longest here before heading northward.
  • Predator Hotspot — High concentrations of big cats during calving season.
